SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) - As expected, “Split” retained its top position with a weekend gross estimated to be $26.2 million. That’s only a 34-percent drop from last weekend. A remarkable feat that pushes M. Night Shyamalan’s newest thriller, which some consider to be a return to form, to over $100 million worldwide. That’s a fantastic start to 2017 for Universal.
Second place went to “A Dog’s Purpose” with $18.3 million. That’s in line with most estimates. The film, which went through a rough stretch the past few weeks, looks to ultimately earn money for Universal as well. It might not be the runaway success they were initially predicting, but all things considered I think the studio has to be relieved by the numbers.
The crowd-pleasing “Hidden Figures” came in third with $14 million. The story of African-American women who helped NASA get off the ground and into outer space has now made $104 million stateside.
In fourth place is “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter” with $13.8 million. That’s the lowest opening for any of the six films in the franchise. It’s a number that Sony and Screen Gems can probably live with, considering the film has brought in $64.5 million overseas. “Resident Evil: Retribution” (2012) earned nearly $200 million overseas and only $40 million domestically. “The Final Chapter” might not match those numbers, but considering the film only cost around $40 million to make, I don’t think the studios are in any danger of losing money on this one.
The highly regarded musical “La La Land” brought in $12 million over the weekend. That pushes its domestic total over $100 million. Worldwide the film has grossed more than $220 million. I don’t know that anyone could have predicted those kinds of numbers.
Also this weekend, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” slid into second place on 2016’s worldwide grosses with $1.03 billion. The only film to make more money worldwide? “Captain America: Civil War” with $1.15 billion.
